Not Autism, Its Autistic - Not a Disability, But an Identity
-Alekhya Pinnamaraju
'I do not have autism, I am autistic'. Autism is not an illness or a disease, it’s just a different way of thinking, reacting, communicating, interacting and experiencing the world. One cannot 'grow out of' autism as it comes with birth, so it pretty much becomes a characteristic of the individual. Many of us believe that autism vanishes with development of age but it doesn’t.
For those who are not well aware, autism is a developmental disorder that impairs the ability to communicate and interact, making it challenging for him/her to connect with people on an emotional level. About 1 percent of the world population has autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (2014). There are numerous presentations of autism and no two autistic people are the same. For some, the level may be negligent but for some it could be a hurdle in their lifestyle.
Research suggests that autism develops from a combination of genetic and nongenetic, or environmental influences. These influences appear to increase the risk that a child will develop autism. Families who have one child with ASD have an increased risk of having another child with the disorder. It is also proved that boys are four times more likely to get autism than girls. It is essential for everyone to know; autism comes from birth and not during the development of age. However, it is identified and diagnosed in many during the ages across 9-15.
Technology can help kids with autism improve verbal skills, social skills, and behaviour. Through the use of educational apps, computer games and programs, kids can increase their focus, get rewarded for good behaviour, learn new skills, and have fun doing it. Some devices (called assistive devices) can even vocalize kids’ thoughts if they have trouble speaking.
We have numerous ways to improve one's life. We just ought to understand the right way to do it. Let us all regard autism as a characteristic and not an illness. That way, there will be less differences and more diversity. Once again, Not Autism, Its Autistic.
