Low Self-Esteem
You feel you’re not good enough. You feel you’re absolute waste. You feel you don't deserve happiness. You feel embarrassed about yourself. You overthink every moment and hurt yourself. You're constantly alert and worried about letting other down? Why? Simple, you have low self esteem issues. Fortunately, you can reverse your thinking and feel extremely good about yourself.
On a lighter note, suppose you are trying out a new activity, which is totally out of your comfort zone. Little self talk and motivation helped and you decided to take it up. Yet, you are under confident, which in fact, is pretty normal because this is your first time. However, what if this issue becomes long term. You always lack confidence, you are afraid to meet new people, you don't feel good about yourself.
Self esteem is the belief that we have for ourselves. Low self esteem obviously means when you do not have a good opinion of yourself, generally something negative or derogatory.
We get a lot of comments from parents, friends ,relatives, media etc. most of them are good but out of all the thousands of comments, our dear brain carefully picks and selects the most hurtful and negative ones because it literally craves for negativity. So, is it by birth or gradually developed? It could be both. Owing to the environment, surroundings you’ve been brought up, family it could be by birth. For example, when you are judged by your relatives, who at times openly comment racist, sexist and demotivating comments, it could plant a small seed in your brain in the name - LOW SELF ESTEEM which would gradually grow taller ,stronger and bigger and bear a fruit that's sadness. Most of the time this isn’t the case.
The second possibility is when you start comparing yourself with others. This often starts during the teenage years. From the smallest of smallest things to the biggest ones, we compare. Sadly humans who are termed to be super intelligent are not exactly wise. The biggest mistake we do is - we compare our weaknesses to others’ strengths. Seems illogical right? Yet we do it all the time!
For instance, person A is extremely intelligent and logical. Person B is super empathetic, cares for others and wants to serve people. Person B is insecure about himself/herself because she/he isn’t smart, she considers herself to be dumb. We can also say that human beliefs also play a vital role. If you carefully observe, only person B is insecure, not person A. This is because we consider intelligence, IQ, logical thinking as a quality that is not prevalent in all. However, we believe being kind, empathetic are universal human qualities. Hence, there’s nothing extraordinary in that.
In context with the present world, not everyone is kind nor super intelligent but what we can do is embrace our talents first and treat every talent unique and equally important
